In an attempt toward resolving border issues, Armenia and Azerbaijan held a videoconference meeting on Friday to discuss the ongoing process of border delimitation. The meeting was led by Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Mher Grigoryan and Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev.

During the meeting, both sides focused on the guidelines necessary for the complex process of defining the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The discussions covered a broad range of topics related to border security and delimitation, an issue that has been a source of tension between the two nations.

Border delimitation is the process of legally defining and marking the borders between two countries. In the case of Armenia and Azerbaijan, this issue has been particularly sensitive due to their long history of Azerbaijani threats, including the recent occupation of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

Apart from discussing the draft guidelines for delimitation, Armenia and Azerbaijan also exchanged views on holding a future in-person meeting to continue their discussions. Such meetings are seen as critical to making tangible progress in defining the borders.

While no specific date was set during the videoconference, both sides agreed to determine the time and location of the next meeting through their working channels.

International organizations and mediators have encouraged Armenia and Azerbaijan to work together to find peaceful solutions. The stability of their shared border is crucial not only for their own security but also for the broader South Caucasus region.

Despite the progress in dialogue, many challenges remain. There are still areas along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border where tensions run high, and past conflicts have left deep scars for Armenians. Finding a mutually acceptable border agreement will require significant compromises and trust-building measures.
