Armenian Woman Appointed Palestine’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates

An Armenian woman has been appointed as Palestine's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

The announcement came as part of the formation of a new government Cabinet, which was revealed by President Mahmoud Abbas through a presidential decree on Thursday. This development was reported by Palestinian Wafa media, shedding light on the diverse composition of the newly formed Cabinet.

Varsen Aghabekian, the newly appointed minister, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. Born in Jordan in 1958, Aghabekian has long been involved in matters concerning Palestine. She is a member of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine, showcasing her dedication to serving the Palestinian community.

Aghabekian's academic background is just as impressive. She earned her master's degree from Purdue University in Indiana, USA, in 1983, followed by a doctorate in political affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. Her academic pursuits have undoubtedly equipped her with valuable insights into political dynamics, which will prove invaluable in her new position.

Prior to her appointment as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Aghabekian served in various capacities, notably as an associate professor at the University of Jerusalem from 1988 to 2008, where she later assumed the role of dean. Her extensive experience in academia suggests a strong foundation in research, analysis, and leadership – qualities essential for navigating the complexities of foreign affairs.
