Armenian Wrestling Legend Artur Aleksanyan Sets a World Record

Artur Aleksanyan, one of Armenia’s greatest sports heroes

Artur Aleksanyan, one of Armenia’s greatest sports heroes, has done it again. This time, he has set a new world record — not on the wrestling mat, but with his incredible grip strength.

The International Wrestling Federation shared a video showing Aleksanyan’s latest achievement: a world record in the handgrip. While the exact number behind the record hasn’t been officially announced yet, the video quickly gained attention across social media, with fans praising his power and discipline.

Aleksanyan, who is 97 kilograms (about 213 pounds), is not only known for his records but also for his legendary career in Greco-Roman wrestling. Born in the city of Gyumri, Armenia, he began training in the sport back in 2000. Over the past two decades, he has built one of the most impressive resumes in the wrestling world.

His Olympic achievements speak for themselves:

  • Bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics

  • Gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics

  • Silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

  • Silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics

In addition to his Olympic success, Aleksanyan is a four-time world champion and a seven-time European champion. Few wrestlers in history have shown such consistency and strength over such a long period.

And he’s not done yet.

On April 12, Aleksanyan will take the stage once again at the European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. His fans are hopeful and excited, as he represents not just Armenia, but a spirit of endurance and pride.

His nickname, “The White Bear,” suits him well — strong, silent, and unstoppable.

As the European Championships begin, all eyes will be on Aleksanyan. And no matter the outcome, his legacy is already carved into the history books of Armenian sports.
