Blocking of Lachin Corridor Poses Risk of Ethnic Cleansing, Warns Yiorgos Loukaides

Lachin corridor

During the PACE summer session, Cypriot MP Yiorgos Loukaides highlighted the severe humanitarian consequences of blocking the Lachin Corridor, putting the lives of thousands at risk and pushing them into dire conditions without access to essential resources like food, medicine, and fuel. He expressed concern that this action could lead to a potential threat of ethnic cleansing.

Loukaides urged Azerbaijan's leadership to acknowledge the grave humanitarian implications resulting from the closure of the Lachin Corridor and the serious violations of human rights. He called for full compliance with the provisions of the trilateral statement signed on November 9, 2020, and the implementation of decisions made by the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights.

The MP stressed the need for confidence-building measures and clear initiatives, including efforts within the framework of the Council of Europe, to address the pressing issues arising from the corridor's closure and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected population.
