Luis Moreno Ocampo, Staunch Armenian Advocate, Loses Home in Palisades Fire
Luis Moreno Ocampo, a renowned human rights activist and the first Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has faced a personal tragedy after losing his home to one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history. Ocampo, who has been a staunch defender of the Armenian people’s rights and one of the first to label Azerbaijan’s actions in Artsakh as genocide, shared the heartbreaking news on social media.
“All the structure collapsed, my house disappeared. Pacific Palisades fire in Malibu. My house in Malibu was destroyed by the fire,” Ocampo wrote in a somber post accompanied by a video.
The Pacific Palisades fire, which erupted on Tuesday morning, has already consumed more than 17,000 acres. For perspective, this area is larger than the entirety of Manhattan, New York, which spans roughly 15,000 acres. As of the latest reports, firefighters are still battling the blaze, with containment at 0%.
Luis Moreno Ocampo is widely respected for his lifelong commitment to human rights and justice. His work as the ICC’s first prosecutor set a precedent for holding perpetrators of crimes against humanity accountable. Over the years, he has been an outspoken supporter of the Armenian community, advocating for their right to live on their indigenous lands. Ocampo’s clear condemnation of Azerbaijan’s actions in Artsakh as genocide resonated deeply with Armenians worldwide and shows his dedication to defending oppressed communities.
