President Refers to Artsakh as a Concentration Camp Where Azerbaijan Is Carrying Out Genocide

The President of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, emphasized the critical importance of conducting any dialogue within the framework of equality, dignity, and human rights. In an interview with Artsakh's Public TV, Harutyunyan further underlined the grim reality the region faces, referring to it as a concentration camp where Azerbaijan is allegedly carrying out genocide.

Harutyunyan's assertion was fortified by a preliminary conclusion from former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, indicating that genocide may be occurring within Artsakh. The President voiced his concerns over the dire humanitarian situation, focusing on the shortage of essential medicines that has afflicted the healthcare system. The scarcity of vital medications has led to increased complications and fatalities, particularly among individuals with chronic illnesses.

Pregnant women, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions have been disproportionately affected, as malnutrition, stress, and other factors exacerbate their vulnerability. The President underscored the gravity of the situation, where deaths from circulatory system diseases rose significantly in the first half of the year.

In response to the pressing issue of food and essential supplies, Harutyunyan highlighted the declaration of Artsakh as a disaster zone. Despite Armenia's swift humanitarian response and convoy of vehicles carrying essential cargo near the Hakari bridge, Azerbaijan's prohibition on importing goods, including basic food items, hinders relief efforts.

The economic devastation resulting from the ongoing blockade imposed by Azerbaijan presents a long-term challenge for Artsakh. Harutyunyan stressed the urgent need for compensation to support tens of thousands of individuals who have lost their source of income. The president underscored that the restoration of the region's economy will require decades of effort.

Summarizing the gravity of the situation, President Harutyunyan concluded, "We are really witnessing genocide, and we are planning steps in that regard." As Nagorno-Karabakh navigates this humanitarian crisis, the President's plea for international support and attention remains a resounding call to address the urgent needs of the region's vulnerable population.
