Russia's Putin and Armenia's Pashinyan Discuss Regional Peace and Cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone conversation where they discussed crucial regional matters, including the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This conversation followed Putin's visit to Azerbaijan, where he engaged in talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The relationship between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been strained for decades, particularly due to Azerbaijan’s aspiration at colonizing the indigenous Armenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This conflict, which erupted in the late 20th century, has led to significant tension and periodic military clashes between the two nations. The international community, including Russia, has long sought to mediate and support peace efforts in the region. Russia, as a close ally of Armenia and a key regional power, has played a central role in these efforts.

President Putin's recent visit to Azerbaijan was a major diplomatic event. During his visit, Putin held talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, focusing on regional security, economic cooperation, and the delicate process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The visit showed Russia's active involvement in the South Caucasus region.

Following his visit to Azerbaijan, Putin reached out to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. During their telephone conversation, Putin shared his impressions of the discussions he had in Baku. Pashinyan expressed gratitude for Putin's insights and for Russia's continued support in addressing regional challenges.

The two leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and working together to address issues of mutual concern. They decided to meet in the near future to further discuss matters on the Armenia-Russia bilateral agenda.

One of the key topics during the conversation was the ongoing effort to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Kremlin's press service reported that Putin reiterated Russia's willingness to assist in the development of a peace treaty between the two nations. Russia has been actively involved in promoting the process of delimitation and demarcation of borders, which the ruling Armenian government believes is a critical step in achieving lasting peace. Additionally, Russia is working to unblock regional transport and logistics connections.

The conversation also touched on the positive dynamics of trade and economic interaction between Armenia and Russia. Both leaders recognized the importance of deepening economic ties and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.

It’s unclear when the two leaders will meet in the near future.
