Russian MFA Attributes Lachin Corridor Situation to Armenia's Recognition of Artsakh's Status
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement, shedding light on the evolving illegal blockade of the Lachin corridor, asserting that Armenia's recognition of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) as part of Azerbaijan has had significant consequences. This statement comes after discussions held during the October 2022 and May 2023 summits convened under the auspices of the European Union, featuring the participation of leaders from both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In the statement released on July 15, 2023, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its perspective on the developments surrounding Artsakh. The Ministry underlined that the ramifications of Armenia's recognition of Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan were evident, contributing to the ongoing situation in the Lachin corridor.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, offered insights into the matter when asked about Russia's role in addressing the issue of Armenians who had been reportedly kidnapped by Azerbaijan within the Lachin corridor. Zakharova stated, "In the new conditions that appeared as a result of Armenia's recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, we see the issue of the peacekeepers in providing possible support on the ground to ensure the rights and security of Karabakh Armenians, including in the context of a direct dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert."
Emphasizing the importance of adhering to previously established agreements, Zakharova urged all parties to fulfill their obligations. She stressed the significance of implementing agreements that have been made and sealed with signatures, emphasizing that such agreements should not be subject to reinterpretation or involve third parties.
Furthermore, Zakharova noted the substantial shift in Armenia's leadership's position on this pivotal issue. Despite this shift, she underscored the importance of honoring commitments and fulfilling obligations, highlighting that these commitments have been reaffirmed numerous times and represent a guarantee of stability.
The statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes at a critical juncture, highlighting the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the Artsakh blockade and the need for all parties involved to uphold their commitments and engage in meaningful dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing issues in the region.
