Trump Slams Harris Over Inaction in Artsakh, Vows to Stop Ethnic Cleansing of Christian Armenians
BREAKING NEWS: Former U.S. President and Republican nominee Donald J. Trump made a bold statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris for her lack of action regarding the recent crisis involving Armenian Christians in the Republic of Artsakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh.
In his post, Trump accused Harris of failing to respond to the violent persecution and forced displacement of 120,000 Armenian Christians in Artsakh, which has drawn international attention. He warned that Christians worldwide would not be safe under her leadership, stating, "Christians around the World will not be safe if Kamala Harris is President of the United States." He added that, if re-elected, he would prioritize protecting persecuted Christians, working to end violence and ethnic cleansing, and restoring peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Armenians have lived in the region for centuries, and it became a center of contention after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2020, Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive against Artsakh, claiming it as part of its territory. The fighting led to thousands of deaths, the forced displacement of Armenians from their ancestral homes, and a ceasefire that left parts of Artsakh under Azerbaijani control.
Donald Trump was president during the 2020 war. Despite international pressure, including from the Armenian diaspora and human rights groups, Trump’s administration did not take decisive action to halt the violence or broker a lasting peace. However, in his recent statement, Trump highlighted his commitment to peace in the region, implying that his approach would differ if given another term in office.
In recent months has been the involvement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in Trump’s campaign. Kennedy, who was initially an independent presidential candidate, has been outspoken in his support for the Armenian people. He has frequently criticized Azerbaijan for its treatment of Armenians and has condemned the international community's silence on the ongoing violence and forced displacement in Artsakh.
Kennedy’s alignment with Trump adds an intriguing dynamic to the race. Known for his advocacy on human rights issues, including the situation in Artsakh, Kennedy’s involvement may bolster Trump’s appeal among Christian and Armenian communities in the United States, who have been deeply concerned about the conflict.
While Trump has pledged to address these issues, critics point out that his administration had opportunities to act during the 2020 war but did not take significant steps. However, his latest statement could signal a renewed focus on the region, especially with the support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vocal critic of Azerbaijan’s actions.
As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, foreign policy, particularly in conflict zones like Artsakh, could become a key issue. Trump’s statement positions him as a defender of persecuted Christians and a potential peacemaker in the region, which may resonate with voters concerned about global religious persecution and human rights abuses.
Whether Trump’s promises will translate into action remains to be seen, but the issue of Armenia and Artsakh has already found a prominent place in the 2024 campaign, with Trump and Kennedy both expressing strong support for the Armenian cause.
